Welcome Message

Having organized the European Conference on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis (ECASIA'09) in October, 2009, many of us have come to realize that the number of researchers dealing with surface science and related phenomena in Turkey, are significantly increasing over the last years, and related industrial entities are also surfacing. Therefore, it was advocated that formation of a scientific society would not only facilitate collaboration, sharing of resources, etc., but also foster integration with the related global entities/activities.

Stemming from this thought, and strongly encouraged by Gary E. McGuire, from the International Affairs Office of the AVS (American Vacuum Society), in the Year 2011, approximately 30 scientists and researchers from different academic as well as industrial units have agreed to establish the Turkish Surface Science Society (TuSSS) under my (temporary) leadership.

For the time being, TuSS will start as a virtual entity, represented mainly by a website (TuSSS.org) for providing a communication channel among the members, till it reaches a point of maturity, afterwhich more official action(s) shall be pursued.

Our 1st action will materialize with a MINI-WORKSHOP on the 23rd of May, 2011. This will be a one-day meeting including one Plenary and 2 Invited Lectures, as well as additional Oral and Poster Presentations. This date was chosen in order to overlap the eveny with Prof. Angus Rockett's visit to Istanbul in the previous week. We will very delighted and honored to host Prof. Rockett, the President of the AVS to launch our activities and also to hear his Plenary Lecture on "Past, Present and Future of Solar Cells". We are also very pleased that 2 distiguished invited Speakers from 2 different countries in Europe have accepted to be with us on this historical occasion. I am also quite confident that with numerous excellent presentations, the meeting will bring many researchers from different surface science that are closely linked to surface science and provide an exciting and conducive opportunity for participants from the academia as well as from the industry.

With this, I cordially invite all interested colleagues in joining us for this exciting and historical event that will be held on May the 23rd 2011, in Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey.

(Temporary) President of the TuSSS
