Welcome Message

Welcome to the Sixth International Symposium on Politeness!

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to host the Sixth International Symposium on Politeness, endorsed by the Linguistic Politeness Research Group. Starting with the first conference held in 2002, in Loughborough - UK, nine successful meetings on various aspects of politeness / impoliteness have taken place in various parts of the globe. The Sixth International Symposium on Politeness  will be held in Ankara, Turkey, July 11-13, 2011 and will be organized by Middle East Technical University.

On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to invite you all to participate in this 3 day symposium.

Since 2002, the International Politeness Symposiums and related events have provided an environment for fruitful discussions on (im)politeness in its cross- and inter-cultural dimensions and have moved the field  forward in various respects in theory and methodology.

The special theme of the Sixth International Symposium on Politeness is ‘Corpus-based and Corpus-driven Approaches to Politeness and Intercultural Communication'. Papers relating to any theoretical and/or applied aspect of (im)politeness and intercultural communication are, however, welcome as usual.

The special theme is motivated by current debates in pragmatic and (im)politeness research, including but not restricted to the following:

*The contribution of (multimodal) corpora to enhancing understandings of interpersonal communication (e.g., studying affect, emotion and non-verbal elements in (im)politeness)
*Methodological issues related to the collection, creation, annotation, and comparability of data in inter- and cross-cultural studies
*How corpus approaches can contribute to theorizing on (im)politeness and intercultural communication

The Symposium will feature plenary lectures by distinguished scholars in the field, paper presentations, panels and poster presentations.

Plans are being made for the publication of selected presentations.

Before and after the symposium there will be several choices for symposium participants and their guests to extend their visit in the city or in scenic areas in Turkey.

On behalf of the Sixth International Symposium Organizing Committee, I extend a warm welcome and invite all researchers to attend the Symposium.

With Best Wishes,

Prof. Dr. Sukriye Ruhi
