Middle East Technical University's presence brought about new methods and introduced innovations to Turkish higher education system manifesting METU as a pioneer of modern education nationwide.

METU also played a key role in the greening of Ankara through its comprehensive re-forestation programme. Starting in 1958, the re-forestation and landscaping programme transformed 4500 hectares of barren land into a city forest. 500 hectares of this area consist of lakes and ponds that also serve as a recreational destination in the city. Moreover, this effort has become a tradition with tree planting festivals being carried out and forested area growing every year. By making the city of Ankara less dry and less polluted, the METU green area has impacted significantly on the quality of life in the city. Following this example, other universities in the region also launched their own re-forestation programmes. The project recieved the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.
