PhD Workshop
Overview

AESOP 2012 PhD Workshop will take place in Izmir, Turkey from 6 to 9 July 2012. The workshop will be carried out in conjunction with the 26th AESOP Congress to be held in Ankara, Turkey from 11 to 15 July, 2012.
The Department of City and Regional Planning in Izmir Institute of High Technology will host the Workshop, which is organised jointly by AESOP, AESOP Young Academics Network, Middle East Technical University (AESOP2012 Congress Host in Ankara) and Izmir Institute of High Technology.
The Workshop invites PhD students from Europe and elsewhere to share their research ideas, experiences, methods and concerns in an intensive programme comprising plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, and excursions. PhD students conducting a research in any theme related to planning and spatial development are welcome to apply.
As 2012 will mark the 25th Anniversary of AESOP, the Workshop will also feature special activities to celebrate the occasion and serve as a platform for launching a discussion on how to enhance the relation between AESOP and AESOP Young Academics Network, a debate, which will be attended further in the Ankara Congress.
The following scholars will join the Workshop as tutors and facilitators:

- Laura Saija, Universita di Catania, Italy
- Piotr Lorens, Technical University of Gdańsk, Poland

- Serap Kayasü, Middle East Technical University, Turkey
- Ali Türel, Middle East Technical University, Turkey
AESOP will be offering a limited number of bursaries. Candidates should indicate this in their application form if they need to apply for a bursary.
The workshop can accept a maximum of 40 PhD students.
Theme
The PhD Workshop focuses predominantly on research design. With a view to provide a link with the main theme of the Ankara Congress, the theme of the workshop is identified to be as follows:
Planning to Achieve/Planning to Avoid:
Purposes and Impacts of Planning; Purposes and Impacts of Planning Research
It will be the purposes and impacts of planning research that the PhD workshop will concentrate on. An important focus is to be dedicated on the rationale of conducting a research in planning, as well as its aims, objectives, and expected outcomes and impacts; nevertheless, other research design issues, namely development of theoretical frameworks, methodology design, and means and methods of dissemination of research findings are also to be covered during the PhD Workshop.
Call for Abstracts
Those interested in participating in the PhD Workshop are expected to fill in the application form and submit this together with their abstract (both forms available to be downloaded on the webpage www.aesop2012.org). Abstracts should not exceed 500 words, and include:
- The name of the PhD researcher
- The institution/school that the research is being carried out at
- The title of the PhD thesis (a tentative title in case this is not finalized)
- Possible keywords regarding the theoretical framework of the PhD research
- The main aim and objectives of the PhD research
- Research method
- Expected outcomes
The deadline for application and abstract submission is February 29, 2012.
The submission of application forms and abstracts should be send via e-mail. Upon receiving a notification of accaptance, registration and payment should be made via the AESOP Congress' online registration system at www.aesop2012.org. Please make sure that you choose the PhD Workshop option from the registration types.
Registration Fee
A registration fee of € 300 should be paid to participate in the PhD Workshop.
The fee covers the following:
- Accommodation costs in Izmir (at university dormitories)
- Breakfasts
- Lunches
- Excursions
- Welcome dinner
In addition, those who participate in the PhD workshop are welcome to join the Ankara Congress without an additional registration fee payment. The Congress will take place from 11 to 15 July 2012, and PhD Workshop participants will be entitled to join this event.
The registration fee does not cover the following:
- Travel costs to and from Izmir/Turkey
- Dinners during the PhD workshop (apart from the welcome dinner)
- Travel cost from Izmir to Ankara (should the participant choose to participate in the Ankara Congress)
- Accommodation costs in Ankara (should the participant choose to participate in the Ankara Congress).

Refundable should the applicant notify the organisation by the end of May
- Full Paper Submissions: 31 May 2012
